Drawn at Candid Arts Trust during their Saturday single pose session. Stephanie created a wonderful, strongly diagonal pose which combined a relaxed, confident appearance, with an exacting poise and artfulness. I bought some new paper and pencils for the day, which unfortunately didn’t cooperate how I’d have liked it to. The new pencils I’d picked up were waxier than the pastel pencils I was used to, so wouldn’t layer. And the sugar paper, despite having a nicer and warmer grey shade than the more fancy Canford paper I’ve used previously, ended up not being a great medium to take the pigment.
So I ended up being a lot more tentative, but it did make me more careful about the proportions. But I also tried to keep things loose and intuitive. Overall, I ended up with about 3 hours on this drawing, but a lot of that was spent more on observation and experimenting on smaller swatches of paper. I also set up a second easel with white paper so I could clear my head with a vine charcoal sketch if I found myself getting too bogged down.
