Untitled Oil

Drawings
2024, oil over acrylic wash on paper, 11″ x 16″

An experiment, my 2nd ever oil painting after an introductory class. I used only 4 paints, the Zorn palette (Cadmium Red, Black, Yellow Ochre and Titanium White), on the figure. Using an acrylic wash to create a cool, light midtone, I used quick, thin layers of paint to try and suggest the subtle differences between the skin tones in a minimal, pale colour scheme. The background was a mixture of rich blue mixed only with black and white, laid on thicker to help offset the more hesitant strokes on the main subject.

Pastel on Blue

Drawings
2025, pastel pencil on blue pastel paper, 15″ x 10″

The reference image I found for this sketch had a fantastic interplay of bright, pale key light, and a vibrant blue fill light against a blue background. I wanted to use the density of the pastel across the upper left, through the face and shoulder, to illustrate the more intense light, and let the background show through more sporadic, messy, reflected light in the lower part. On the shadow/key side, a darker blue pencil was used, with a purple pencil to handle the warmer, subsurface scattering as the colder colours meet the pale pinks of the direct light. The flash of pink of the outfit made for a bold focal point to ensure the drawing didn’t end up too cold overall, to establish the hints of pink and pale reds in the skin tones.

Jessica Chastain

Drawings
“Jessica C”, 2013, grey coloured pencils on grey toned paper, 8″ x 11″

A very, very early sketch that I laboured over not long after picking up pencils for the first time in years. I drew this using very waxy Lyra Rembrandt pencils, which meant a lot more close attention to detail than I’m now used to and a lot less mess. Of all the sketches I made back then, this is one of only two that I still have around. I’m still pretty happy with it! Jessica Chastain was on such an amazing run of roles for so many years, from The Tree of Life onwards, but especially Jeff Nichols’ Take Shelter, which I absolutely love. And, later, her incredibly imposing turn in A Most Violent Year. She’s pretty awesome.

Available as a high quality A4 poster here. Original available, contact for details.

Triquetra

Drawings
“Triquetra”, 2019, sanguine pencil and white chalk pencil on toned grey paper, 11″ x 16″

This was a practice sketch from an online life drawing pose resource site that I took a bit of a liking to, and decided to finish off with a bit of Celtic imagery. All very instinctive, so perhaps a little short of sub-textual depth, but I still like it. Feel free to make up your own narrative for it!

Commission – Gali x Columbo = Galumbo

Drawings
“MARINE PAINT”, 2018, charcoal pencils on toned grey paper and digital editing, 7″ x 5″

My esteemed Rewind Movie Podcast co-host Gali introduced me to Columbo back in the halcyon days of the Northern Film School, where our absurd amount of free time meant that we could scour the Freeview schedules on a daily basis looking for episodes, until I mustered up the spare cash from my sporadic cleaning jobs to buy the enormous series DVD boxset on discount from HMV in Leeds. From there, we were unstoppable, obsessing over the show’s bizarre and impressive roster of luminaries from Steven Spielberg and Jonathan Demme to Martin Sheen and Patrick McGoohan, cataloguing Peter Falk’s bag of method acting tics, and resolving to memorise every single murderer and weapon of choice.

When he asked if I could make a portrait of him, I just had to finally cast him in the role of a lifetime.
