Jessica Chastain

Drawings
“Jessica C”, 2013, grey coloured pencils on grey toned paper, 8″ x 11″

A very, very early sketch that I laboured over not long after picking up pencils for the first time in years. I drew this using very waxy Lyra Rembrandt pencils, which meant a lot more close attention to detail than I’m now used to and a lot less mess. Of all the sketches I made back then, this is one of only two that I still have around. I’m still pretty happy with it! Jessica Chastain was on such an amazing run of roles for so many years, from The Tree of Life onwards, but especially Jeff Nichols’ Take Shelter, which I absolutely love. And, later, her incredibly imposing turn in A Most Violent Year. She’s pretty awesome.

Available as a high quality A4 poster here. Original available, contact for details.

Triquetra

Drawings
“Triquetra”, 2019, sanguine pencil and white chalk pencil on toned grey paper, 11″ x 16″

This was a practice sketch from an online life drawing pose resource site that I took a bit of a liking to, and decided to finish off with a bit of Celtic imagery. All very instinctive, so perhaps a little short of sub-textual depth, but I still like it. Feel free to make up your own narrative for it!

Jules

Life drawing
“Jools’ Strain”, 2018, vine charcoal and pastel on sugar paper, 10″ x 14″

Drawn from life at The Moon and Nude Clapham, October 2018.

Jools only modelled for us once at the pub in Clapham, but she was a) very friendly and b) an extremely accomplished dancer and yoga practitioner, which came across in her extraordinary ability to hold this pose for 20 minutes. This sketch may not be one of my most polished, but I do really like the dynamism and at least partially successful attempt to interpret the fantastic pose.

The Rock

Movie Artwork
“Winners Go Home and Fuck The Prom Queen”, 2021, charcoal pencils, chalk pastel and pastel pencil on toned grey paper, 9″ x 9″

Took a leaf out of Michael Bay’s book on this one vis-à-vis subtlety. You can taste the colours with your mind, brother! I think it kinda looks oddly like Connery is wearing some sort of outrageous late ’90s football shirt, what with the little Alcatraz as the club crest. That Alcatraz was inspired by the terrible Blu-ray cover, which stuffs an awkwardly clipped little jpeg of the prison at some random position under the floating giant heads. I thought it was funny.

Wild Things

Movie Artwork
“Where’s Your Hose, Mr Lombardo?”, 2021, charcoal pencils and pastel pencils on toned grey paper, 8″ x 10″

A pretty quick sketch for a bit of a sly favourite – there’s something gleefully wrong about this film that is impressive to behold. It’s a boldly amoral, extremely entertaining headrush cocktail of teen trash, neo-noir, skeevy erotic thriller and black comedy. See ya at the club, Tom!

Full Metal Jacket

Movie Artwork
“Everything Clean. Smooth Shiny.”, 2021, charcoal pencils on toned grey paper, 9″ x 9″

Absolutely unbelievable that this was Vincent D’Onofrio’s first movie appearance – he’s absolutely magnetic, tragic, pitiable, and eventually terrifying. It’s a startling, extraordinary debut.

Unfortunately for the meta narrative, he had already appeared in Troma’s The First Turn-On!
Enjoy?

Demons

Movie Artwork
“Where The Hell Is Rosemary?”, 2018, charcoal pencils and chalk pastel on toned grey paper, 7″ x 5″

My cousin from Chicago played this film for me when I was 6 years old. I blame that viewing for all my weird subsequent fixations and fascinations, so big thanks to cousin Kenny for setting me on the righteous path of the gorehound with his benevolent negligence.
